Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
