European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
